Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
